GETTING STARTED WITH BMX
There is no reason to let starting BMX racing intimidate you. Grab your bike, come out on a free practice night (Tuesdays) and we’ll be there to help. We have loaner helmets, and you can ride with a more experienced rider that can give you tips getting around the course. Once you are ready to try a race, your first is on us!
WHAT AGES RACE BMX?
We have 2 year olds riding Strider bikes (balance bikes without peddles) and riders 60 years+. New riders start in the novice class, so they can learn how to win races against others new to the sport.
WHAT GEAR DO I NEED?
- All bikes must be tech inspected on arrival to the track to check for safety.
- Full face helmets are required (We have free loaner helmets).
- Full length shirts or proper full arm protection.
- Pants — no shorts.
- If under 18 years of age, a parents/guardian will need to sign a consent form.
All though knee pads and elbow pads are not required, we suggest their usage. We have a limited amount of helmets, pads and jerseys to use for FREE on a first come first serve basis.
COST & COMMITMENT
BMX is an individual sport, meaning you can take it as serious or casual as you like. You are competing for points against other riders at your skill level and age, the more you race the more points you can earn.
Outside the cost of your bike and safety equipment there are not a lot of expenses. Local single point races at HagerstownBMX are $10, Maryland State Qualifiers are $25, other regional and national races cost a little more.
Bikes come in all sizes and costs. Strider bikes (balance bikes with no pedals for ages under 5) start at around $70, entry level 20″ race bikes start around $300. There is a huge used market, as riders upgrade or grow out of their current bikes and safety gear, that can save a significant amount of money.
